Matthew Kelly to conduct seminar at Good Shepherd Church on passion and purpose
By Nathan Rumohr

Catholic motivational speaker Matthew Kelly hopes his upcoming seminar at Good Shepherd Church will bring passion and purpose to the attendees in their everyday lives.

The author of the bestseller Rediscovering Catholicism is a world-renowned public speaker, motivating Catholics to become the "best versions of themselves."

"I think those who attend can expect an experience that encourages them to step back and take another look at who they are and where they are in their lives and their spiritual journeys," Kelly told The B.C. Catholic.

Kelly's topics will include how to tell when God is speaking to you and how to apply the "incredible genius of Catholicism to everyday life."

"God's dream for each of us is that we become the best version of ourselves," Kelly explained. "The Second Vatican Council described this dream God has for us as the universal call to holiness."

Kelly believes people, especially Catholics, need to realize the "genius of Catholicism" today to combat society's increasing secularism.

"Unless we can show people how the truth of Catholicism can be applied to their lives of sin in the modern context, we will continue to lose people" from the Church, he said.

Kelly will receive no compensation for his time giving the seminar. The native Australian said most of his income comes through his Chicago company Floyd Consulting, and he sees his work in the Church as a ministry.

"Paul was a tent maker; that was how he took care of his worldly needs," he said. Kelly's firm does work for some the biggest companies in the world, including 3M, McDonalds, and Pepsi.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Dynamic Catholic Confirmation Project, a program to reinvigorate and modernize confirmation programs across North America. Kelly is the founder and president of the organization.

"The Dynamic Catholic Institute is dedicated to developing world-class resources for Catholics and their parishes," Kelly explained. He said the organization will launch the confirmation program in 2013.

Tickets for the "Passion and Purpose Seminar" are available for $40 from the Star of the Sea Parish office: 2250 150 St., Surrey; 604-531-5739.
